UF HEALTH INSPIRE: A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

There’s no greater story to tell than that of sacrificing and giving for another. Liesl and Randy had a friendship decades long. And when Randy—who suffered from a devastating kidney disease and was on dialysis—needed a kidney transplant, Liesl stepped up. Turns out, she was a match. Her husband was at first a bit skeptical, knowing that their diabetic granddaughter could need a kidney transplant in the future. But he quickly supported Liesl and stood behind her the whole way. Now, Randy is living with one of Liesl’s kidneys (they named it Lili!), and they’re both doing fine.

This story emphasizes sacrifice and love for another human being, but also shows how love overcomes all obstacles. Listen closely to why Liesl donated her kidney. It was so Randy, a person she respected and admired, could live longer. She recognized the inherent value of his life, and that he contributes so much love and laughter to this world. Liesl models what it truly means to give sacrificially. And Randy models what it means to embrace second chances and live life to its fullest.

Being Cuban, Randy loves to cook. We were fortunate to be able to eavesdrop (with a camera!) on Randy and Liesl’s 6-month kidney transplant anniversary dinner. But surprise! We invited Randy’s primary surgeon to the party without Randy knowing. What a joy it was to capture the moment of reconnection between Randy and his surgeon.

The backdrop of Randy’s lake house provided the perfect ending to this incredible story. The sun may set on each of our days, but it never sets on the love a strong friendship cultivates and nurtures.
